Homeschool Evaluations
What Qualifies Me to do a Homeschool Evaluation?
The Colorado Department of Education states, “According to homeschool law, the assessments that homeschool students must take are either a nationally standardized achievement test or an evaluation of academic progress administered by a qualified person that the parent selects.”
-A qualified person is someone who has a Colorado teacher license, is a teacher in an independent or parochial school, is a licensed psychologist, or has a master’s degree in education.
I have a masters degree in Curriculum and Instruction, through the school of Education from Western Governors University, which qualifies me to do homeschool evaluations.
In addition to meeting the Colorado Department of Education requirements, I have been in education for 17 years. I have worked with students in a variety of different learning environments, and have been homeschooling my own children for 6 years. We started in the public school system and when COVID hit and school was difficult and unsteady we decided to try homeschooling. We fell in love with the lifestyle and opportunity for each of our kids to learn in their own unique way and we never looked back!
Why Choose to do an Evaluation instead of standardized testing?
01
Standardized testing offers a single day snapshot of your child’s abilities. Your child has spent an entire year growing and increasing their knowledge and trying to pack an entire year of learning into one single day on a test doesn’t reflect all of the hard work and effort that you and your child have put into education throughout the year. An educational evaluation provides you with an opportunity to show your child’s hard work and highlight their unique learning.
02
The National Education Association has stated that, “Standardized tests are an inaccurate and unfair measure of student progress.” Standardized testing is a “one size fits all” type of assessment and it often lacks the ability to highlight a students learning and growth throughout a school year.
As a homeschool parent you have experienced learning without limits, learning that happens naturally and that is student guided. Not learning that happens because it will be tested and graded later. A homeschool evaluation will help to demonstrate your students learning in all the wonderful ways!
03
Individual learning styles are not taken into consideration with standardized testing. Multiple-choice formats do not account for students with ADHD, dyslexia, and autism, inaccurately portraying their true intelligence and knowledge.
A homeschool evaluation offers many creative ways to showcase a students true intelligence and knowledge of subjects without ever comparing them to another students learning.
The Process:
Step 1:
Reach out to me via the contact form, and after a short phone call to discuss the process, I will send you a Google Form that will guide you through what to include to showcase your child’s learning.
Step 2:
Fill out the Google Form including 1 sample for reading, writing, math, science, history, and government.
Step 3: Complete the payment process. Once payment is made the evaluation will begin. Evaluations will be done within a week from payment. If will take longer than a week, I will discuss this with you. There is no deadline in Colorado to turn in evaluations so no need to stress about getting your evaluation done in a specific time window!
Step 4: Get your evaluation results returned via e-mail. You can then turn the evaluation into your district. Make sure to keep a copy for your records as well!
